Covers or crowns

What is a prosthetic sleeve or crown?

A crown is a fixed prosthesis that is cemented in place to cover a dental piece, protecting it as if it were an armor to improve its functionality in the chewing process and improving its esthetic appearance.

The crown can be made of different materials:

  • Zirconium crowns consist of an internal zirconium core that provides strength and very good biocompatibility with the gum, and a layered ceramic coating that provides translucency and esthetics.
  • Lithium disilicate crowns have a wide range of indications and excellent esthetics. They are made by milling a single block of porcelain to increase the strength factor of the material. This material is very suitable for high esthetic treatments in the anterior teeth area, but it does not allow us to make bridges or long sections.
  • Metal-porcelain or metal-ceramic crowns are used in posterior sectors due to the resistance they offer. They consist of a metal cap covered with porcelain to give the appearance of natural teeth. Their use is not indicated for teeth that are visible in the smile, since they are made of metal, the esthetic finish may not be the desired one.

Some of the main indications that exist for placing a crown are:

  • If the tooth has been exposed to endodontic treatment increasing its fragility.

  • If the tooth has too large a reconstruction and has lost a lot of tooth structure.

  • If the tooth presents severe wear causing sensitivity problems.

  • If the tooth is poorly formed or discolored and you want to improve esthetics.

  • If the tooth has suffered a strong trauma with breakage of the dental piece.

How to place a wreath?

Typically, the dental crown procedure is completed in two sessions. In the first session, the dentist removes, through careful grinding, part of the natural tooth structure to make room for the dental crown. An impression is taken and sent to the laboratory, where the dental crown is created in approximately two weeks. In many cases, a temporary crown will be placed between visits to ensure the most natural look and feel possible.

In the second session, the temporary crown is removed and the new custom-made dental crown is fixed with dental cement.
